The Psychology Behind Creative Thinking

Creative thinking is supported by our brain’s ability to imagine the future. From planning weekend activities to envisioning our long-term goals, our brains have the capacity to visualize experiences that have not yet occurred. Interestingly, the same part of our brain that allows us to recall the past also allows us to imagine the future: the hippocampus. The hippocampus is responsible for the formation, organization, and storage of memories, and allows us to both construct past events as well as construct possible future events as well. Furthermore, the default network, which includes the prefrontal cortex, posterior cortex, as well as parts of the parietal and temporal lobes, is also activated during creative thinking. All of these areas activate “by default” when we are relaxing without any cognitive tasks to complete. When our minds are left to do nothing but wander, we tend to engage in all sorts of spontaneous thinking, much of which involves recalling past experiences and envisioning future ones. The roles of the hippocampus and the default network suggest that both memory and imagination involve actively recombining episodic detail, such as people, places, and events that we have encountered. While daydreaming or letting our minds roam freely can lead to the generation of new ideas, there is no certainty that those ideas will be of use. Consequently, creative thinking involves actively incorporating the knowledge that we already have while simultaneously redirecting our thought process to generate novel ideas that have practical value. It is an active endeavor demanding both thoughtful effort and adept problem solving skills, and there are numerous psychological-based  techniques that enhance the efficiency of the creative thinking process.

Techniques to Boost Creativity

Cultivating the Right Environment

Immersing ourselves in optimal environments for creative thinking is crucial in nurturing and harnessing our innovative capacities. Much like a plant that requires the right blend of sunlight, soil, and water to thrive, our creativity flourishes best under certain circumstances. A clutter free, aesthetically pleasing workspace can help promote mental clarity and organization, while ambient lighting and noise levels can impact our ability to focus. Lighting candles, for instance, can not only modify the ambience, but also introduce a calming scent. Specifically, all of our Four Truffles candles, crafted with frankincense and eucalyptus molecules, are scientifically proven to elevate focus and positive mood as well as enhance cognitive performance and increased alertness. The natural inspiration behind them– the elements of air, fire, earth, and water– resonates with our intrinsic connection to nature, stimulating the mind and opening pathways to innovative thought. Introducing other elements of nature, such as house plants and working in natural sunlight, can also reduce stress and increase feelings of well being, further boosting creativity. Moreover, personal touches that resonate with your personality and preferences, whether it be artwork, personal pictures, or inspirational quotes, can serve as constant sources of motivation and inspiration.

My little workspace in New York City may be compact, but serves as a powerful space for creativity. At around 3:30 in the afternoon, the ambience of my workplace comes alive. As the afternoon sun filters through my window, it bounces off a strategically placed disco ball that I hung above my windowsill, transforming my bedroom with a cascade of dancing light beams. These radiant spots illuminate vibrant posters of the places I have ventured to and cherished pictures of my loved ones. As I recline in my desk chair, soaking in this mesmerizing scene, I am transported back to those treasured memories and adventures. This daily luminescent spectacle connects me with my past experiences which helps stirs up my creative energy.

When the sun starts to set and my room becomes dim, I light up my favorite Four Truffles candle, Canyon Sanctuary, and let its gentle flame cast a warm, ambient glow across my workspace. The scent, reminiscent of crisp rainwater and floral undertones as well as hints of the frankincense and eucalyptus molecules, wafts through the room, enveloping me in a sense of motivation and peace. As the sweet aroma intertwines with the flickering light, my surroundings transform into a haven for reflection and creativity. With every inhalation, I feel more connected to nature, grounding my thoughts in the perfect place for a night of focused work.

Taking Breaks

When we encounter a particularly challenging problem and find ourselves stuck in a cycle of repeated and unproductive thoughts, we are trapped in what is referred to as fixations. It’s as if our cognitive pathways are gridlocked, and we are unable to navigate through our mental roadblock. This is where the power of deliberate distraction comes to play. By taking breaks and allowing our minds to wander, we create cognitive distance from the immediate problem. Through engaging in unrelated activities such as going on a walk, listening to music, or doing chores, we can activate different areas of the brain that help foster the integration of diverse pieces of information that might have previously seemed unrelated to the issue at hand. By the time we return to the problem, we are often armed with a new angle or creative solution that was previously elusive.

Thinking of Past Experiences

Before embarking on a creative project, it might be helpful to take a few moments to deeply reflect on a past experience, whether that be an unforgettable trip abroad or that other day that you spent at your local park. This could serve as a catalyst for unlocking a more expansive and diverse realm of creative thought. By recalling a specific memory in rich detail– from the emotions felt, the colors scene, to the sounds heard– we stimulate the brain regions that are responsible for imagination, foresight, and scenario planning. Research has suggested that after recalling varied experiences from our experiences, individuals tend to exhibit heightened ability to generate diverse ideas in subsequent creative tasks. Through reflection, we are essentially creating a wider array of neural connections available for the brain-storming process.

Continuous Learning and Curiosity

In our rapidly changing world, adopting the mindset of a lifelong learner is not just an asset, but a necessity. Continuous learning equips us with fresh perspectives, keeps our skills relevant, and ensures that we remain adaptable in a constantly changing landscape. There are numerous ways to enrich our knowledge and nurture our creative thinking. Books offer a window into different worlds and wisdom, courses provide structured insight on specific fields, workshops facilitate hands-on experiences and collaboration. Furthermore, research has found a strong link between living abroad and creativity. The consistent exposure to new cultures and environments helps open the mind and broaden our horizons. Each of these avenues stimulates our creative thinking, ensuring that we remain both informed and inspired throughout our lives.

Embracing Challenges and Overcoming Fear

Setbacks and failures, while often disheartening in the moment, can serve as opportunities for profound creative breakthroughs. Instead of signaling an end, they provide unique learning opportunities that challenge us to reevaluate and refine our ideas. These challenging moments often lead to greater clarity and innovative solutions that would not have been apparent without the initial obstacles. While fear of judgment can sometimes inhibit our willingness to take risks or share our ideas, it is important to understand that criticism can be a valuable tool for growth. To combat this fear, finding a supportive community, seeking constructive feedback, and constantly reminding yourself of past successes are all crucial for our creative journeys.
