What is the Science Behind Aromachology?

Aromachology unlike its closely related cousin aromatherapy, is a relatively modern field that combines psychology and chemistry to study how different scents affect human behavior, mood and overall well-being.  The term was coined in the 1980's by the Sense of Smell Institute, a research and educational division of the Fragrance Foundation.

When we inhale a scent, odor molecules travel through the nose to the olfactory receptors, which send signals directly to the limbic system, the part of the brain associated with emotions and memories.  This direct pathway explains why certain scents can evoke strong emotional responses and influence our mood and behavior almost instantly.  For example, lavender has been shown to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, while citrus scents can invigorate and uplift our spirits.

Here are some of the most popular essential oils and how they can enhance well-being:

1. Lavender Known for its calming and soothing properties, lavender is often used to reduce anxiety, stress and promote restful sleep.  It's a staple in many of our products aimed at fostering emotional wellness.  In fact, we refer to Lavender as "the Soother".
2. Eucalyptus: This invigorating oil is known for its ability to clear the mind and boost energy levels.  It's also great for respiratory health, making it a key ingredient in our products designed for physical wellness.  We refer to Eucalyptus as "the Clarifier".
3. Chamomile:  With its gentle, calming effect, chamomile is perfect for easing tension and promoting relaxation.  It's an excellent choice for emotional and spiritual wellness.
4. Peppermint:  This refreshing oil helps enhance focus and mental clarity, making it ideal for intellectual wellness.  It's also known for its ability to alleviate headaches and improve digestion.
5. Rose:  Renowned for its ability to uplift mood and promote a sense of well-being, rose oil is often used in products aimed at fostering love and emotional balance.
6. Frankincense: Revered for its grounding properties, frankincense supports spiritual wellness by promoting meditation and deep breathing practices.  We refer to Frankincense as "the Balancer".
7. Ho Wood: Known for its balancing and calming properties, Ho Wood oil helps alleviate stress and anxiety, making it a valuable addition to our products aimed at emotional and physcial wellness.  With it's combined benefits to balance and calm, we refer to Ho Wood as "the Harmonizer".

Here are some practical ways to harness the power of scents for improved well-being:

1.  Diffusers:  Using an essential oil diffuser is a great way to fill your home with the benefits of aromachology.  Whether you need to relax after a long day or boost your energy in the morning, diffusers can be customized with different oils to suit your needs.  One of our favorite and most recommended pairing is to have all 4 of our wellness molecules combined when diffusing a room.  Since Ho Wood is the faintest scent in comparison to lavender, eucalyptus and frankincense, we recommend using 3 drops of the 3 oils and 10 drops of Ho Wood.
2.  Personal Care Products:  Many of our products at Four Truffles, such as our candles, essential oil kit, pillow sachets and soon to come lotions, body oils, spray and soap are all infused with essential oils.  Incorporating these into your daily self-care routine can provide continuous benefits.
3.  Inhalers and Sprays:  Essential oil inhalers and room sprays are convenient ways to enjoy the benefits of aromachology on the go.  Keep them in your bag, at your desk, or in your car for a quick mood boost whenever you need it.
4.  Massage and Bath:  Adding a few drops of essential oil to your bath or using them during a massage can enhance relaxation and promote a sense of well-being.

DIY Aromatherapy Recipes

To further engage our community, we love sharing simple DIY aromatherapy recipes that can be easily made at home. 

Here are a few of our favorites that feature our wellness molecules:

1. Calming Lavender and Ho Wood Bath Salts:
  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops ho wood essential oil
Mix all ingredients in a bowl and store in an airtight container.  Add a handful to your bath for a relaxing soak.

2. Invigorating Eucalyptus and Frankincense Room Spray:
  • 1/2 cup distilled water
  • 1/4 cup witch hazel
  • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 10 drops frankincense essential oil
  • Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle.  Shake well and use to freshen up any room.
3. Focus-Boosting Peppermint Lavender Inhaler
  • 1 cotton wick inhaler
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil
  • Place the cotton wick inside the inhaler tube and add the essential oils.  Inhale deeply whenever you need a mental boost.

Promoting Our Sensory Integration Workshop: Blending Aromachology, Sound/Body Movement, and Virtues


We're thrilled to announce our upcoming Sensory Integration workshop, where we'll delve deeper into the world of aromachology and other holistic practices.  This workshop is designed to help you integrate the senses through the power of scents, sounds and body movements. 

During the sessions, our guests will be provided with essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, frankincense and ho wood, which can be used in various ways - inhale directly from the bottle, apply to wrists, palms, and temples.  Additionally, we'll offer a cooling mist throughout the atmosphere and steamed towels infused with our wellness molecules, creating a fully immersive experience.
